I am about to do something crazy. Not like, “Hey look what I can do,” crazy. More like, “Most people are going to think your crazy,” crazy.
We are selling everything we own, moving into a much smaller place, saving for one year, and then come June, 2016 we will be vagabonding, which is to say we will be TRAVELING FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR!
It all started when my partner in all things, JD, and I were in Florida for two weeks. We stayed in a darling little condo where everything in the small space was intentional and everything had a place. There was no excess. It felt light and easy and more than anything else, it felt right. We loved it.
JD and I don’t want a lot of the same things most people want. We don’t want a bigger house. We don’t want more stuff. The truth is, we want less stuff. MUCH LESS STUFF. Being in that condo made us feel so unencumbered and so peaceful. It was almost painful to leave it and come back to 3 levels of furniture and knick-knacks and cabinets full of pots & pans & dishes we never use.
We’ve also noticed that since we’ve come home to Kansas City we aren’t in the same room as much. In Florida we worked side by side, he in his recliner and me in mine. Here my favorite space is the basement while his is the ground floor. We text and email each other questions. Seriously. That’s ridiculous.
On the road trip to Florida and back home we talked a lot about what it is we genuinely want in life. We’re getting older, after all. If we want to do something extraordinary, now is the time.
So, we made a decision.
More than anything else we’ve ever wanted, we want to take one entire year and travel. After that year? Well, we’ll see.
In Rolf Potts’ inspirational book Vagabonding, he writes that you have to earn your adventure. JD and I are taking that seriously. As of June 1st, 2015, we are committed to working crazy hard for 365 days so that when we leave Kansas City on June 1, 2016, we will have earned it.
We own a business that will allow us to continue to work from anywhere in the world, which is wonderful. But, we want to leave knowing we owe nothing to anyone, or as close to nothing as we can get. 🙂
In preparation for our year-long journey we also want to learn to live in a truly intentional way. We have chosen to sell everything we own, and kids I do mean everything… furniture, electronics, dishes, every spoon and every fork. When we settle on a new, much smaller place to live during this year of preparation we will buy only what we need and each thing that comes into that space will be carefully considered and chosen.
For example, if you looked in my kitchen cabinets right now you’d see countless glasses and coffee cups. Why? There are two of us. We’ll get rid of all those in favor of buying two coffee cups, each chosen because we love it.
What if someone comes over to drink coffee, Sher? Oh, the humanity!
Should that happen, (and it never does), I’ll go on a wild spending spree and buy two more.
Presently there is a lot of dark brown leather furniture in my house. Downstairs, my beloved theater seating. Upstairs, JD’s precious leather sofa, chair & ottoman. They’re nice. But, they are heavy and dark and big and they don’t feel good to us any more. So we’re saying goodbye to them and in their place will be pieces of furniture that feel good to sit in and be around. It won’t matter if JD’s chair looks like a giant hunk of man material, or if mine is bright yellow and covered in fairy dust. It will only matter that we each adore what we choose.
When we have earned our adventure and are ready to set out, we’ll give away what we’ve used for the year.
The only thing we’ll miss as we drive away from Kansas City in 2016 is our children and our grandmonkeys. I’ve made it clear that I’ll go anywhere in the world so long as we have budgeted for me to fly back once a month for those 12 months to be with my babies. I’d shrivel up and die otherwise. As often as he wants, JD will come with me.
There it is then. Our master plan. We’ve never been more excited or determined about anything. I’ll share how it’s going as we move through this next year. Right now I have no idea how in the world I’m going to organize and sell all this stuff, so if you have ideas make sure you share with me. I’m also sort of anxious about where we’re going to move for the year. I’m all about the downsizing, but I’m not living in a van down by the river! We’ll see how it goes.
Thanks for reading and I really do hope you’ll share your ideas, tips or thoughts about what we’re doing.
PS: I need a name for our big adventure. Will you help? Sher & JD World Domination 2016? Intentionally Homeless? Sher & JD Sell Everything They Own, Then Freak Out and Worry They’ve Made a Horrible Mistake? HELP!!!
